Gordoa / Hein duo

free improvisation
Fri 19.2. - 19:30

Emilio Gordoa - Vibraphone
Nicola Hein – Guitar

The duo Gordoa/Hein plays new free improvised music created in the moment of the performance, without concepts or compositions being made beforehand. But that doesn’t mean that they are not creating an aesthetic concrete musical form in real time. The extension of the traditional vocabulary of their instruments and the language of free improvised music forms a strong basis which they use to create a landscape of sounds in which silence plays an important role and a defined quality of sound.

Nicola L. Hein is a guitarist, composer and sound artist. As a guitarist, he is mainly concerned about the search for new sounds on his instrument. He plays electric and acoustic guitar with or without preparations and tries to find new ways of playing the guitar within the context of free improvised music and Jazz.

As a composer, he tries to use different techniques of writing music and therefore musical thoughts (standard notation, graphic notation, verbal instructions, etc.) to ultimately inspire improvisation to happen in a way other than it would without a composition.

As a sound artist, he is mainly involved with sound installations which involve the percipient as a part of the actual work, because the work has to be played by the percipient. The works encourage them to make a special aesthetic experience with different sounds. The aesthetic of these sounds is inspired by the aesthetics of free improvised music.

Hein studied jazz guitar, Philosophy and German philology at Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität Bonn and Gutenberguniversität Mainz.

Emilio Gordoa Rodriguez is a Mexican composer and vibraphonist based in Berlin since 2012. He is involved in numerous projects including his work as a soloist and in collaboration with theater and dance. Rodriguez’ special focus is on sound art, experimental music, noise, free jazz, improvisation and contemporary music. He has redefined the vibraphone as a source, treating it with preparations and extended techniques, and is a busy composer as well, writing graphic scores for a variety of ensembles, large and small, for theater, documentary films and audiovisual works.

Rodriguez studied music composition with Vincent Carver and Mario Lavista, and percussion with Raul Tudon. He has collaborated and performed with artists such as German Bringas, John Russell, Tristan Honsinger, John Butcher, John Edwards, Misha Marks, Axel Dörner, Tony Buck, Tobias Delius, Ignaz Schick, Jack Wright, Remi Alvarez, Klaus Kürvers, Alexander Bruck, Roland Ramanan, and Ute Wassermann.

He often plays with the BerIO (Berliner Improviser Orchestra), and other ensembles like the Circuit Traning (electro-acousting octet). Rodriguez has performed in several venues and festivals around Europe such as the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2014, Klangkunstprojekte of Leipzig, Art-Sound Festival Berlin, CSW (Contemporary Art Museum of Warsaw), and in Vortex London. Some of his recent projects include: soel, Para.keets, Corso and MOvE.
