Alena Foustková – Reflection or else Look for Vendula
Metamorphosis of books as "containers of information"
January 11 – February 22, 2011
opening Mon January 10, 18:00
Reflection means also „mirroring“. In this context it means a reflection or contemplation upon the current situation of reading.
In our age of information, books have ironically become more and more a marginal source of knowledge and inspiration. Mass pop-culture builds the relationship on a fast consumption and minimal effort.
A book has been used here as a visual three-dimensional material which gives it a new and unexpected meaning. The effect of a draft inside the courtyard helps to give the object a kinetic aspect and an illusion of flipping pages. At the same time, books do not loose an ability to communicate. Who discovers Vendula?
Annotation, Jiří Valoch, from a catalogue to an exhibition in Gallery of Critics, Prague, April 2010:
„...new forms of manipulation with texts or their elements or, on the contrary, with what “contains” them, whether newspapers, books or such a seemingly traditional medium as classical painting, in fact thematize the false side of mass communication, though in very subtle ways that enrich the sphere of work with the text as well as with the reassessment of the book as an ordinary bearer of certain information…“
